"Virtualise-it" Simple solutions to complex problems
Virtualise-it is an independent consultancy specialising in the design, deployment and support of Symantec Netbackup infrastructure. Since 2001 we have worked with many UK Financial, Telecoms and Utility companies to deploy Symantec NetBackup in the Datacentre. We Specialise in building scalable backup & recovery soultions, using vendor best practice and our own integration products to provide future proof solutions with managability in mind.
Virtualise-it have specialists to assist in the integration of the following technologies Brocade Fibre Channel Switches HDS, EMC and Openfiler Disk Technologies Oracle, DB2, MySQL and SQL Server Databases Veritas Volume Manager and Veritas Cluster Services ADIC and StorageTek Tape Libraries Diligent, Sepaton and DataDomain Virtual Libraries and De-Duplication
8th January 2006 - Virtualise-it standardise on Vmware to provide virtualise development and testing environments. Since adopting virtual server technology Virtualise-it have been able to half the development and testing cycle for their databse integration products whilst reducing hardware operating and support costs. 20th April 2007 - ProjectLocker.Com are selected to provide a software version control and trac call logging portal for Virtualise-it's distributed development team. 18th June 2008 - Virtualise-it integrate NetBackup with Oracle 10's RMAN Flash Recovery Area to give near instant database recovery combined with 'tape based' backups for longer term data retention.
bkoracle is an interface between Symantec's Oracle agent for Netbackup and Oracle's RMAN. With bkoracle there is no longer a requirement to generate bespoke scripts to implement RMAN backups. bkoracle is a singel executable that generates RMAN directives dynamically, supporting most native RMAN functionality, and integrated with RAC and VCS clusters. To implement RMAN backups with bkoracle the user simply creates an appropriate NetBackup schedule. bkoracle is already in use at a number of blue chip companies abcking up Oracle databases for 2GB to 26TB.
Online & offline backups bkoracle supports both online and offline backups, managing the database shutdown and startup from within the backup. where the database is under VCS cluster control and an offline backup is requested bkoracle uses appropriate VCS commands to stop and start the database resourse Full and incremental backups bkoracle supports both FULL and INCREMENTAL backups, optionally enabling 'change block tracking' in Oracle version 10 and higher. Offhost split mirror & standby database Where database performance can't be compromised bkoracle supports offhost backups via disk vendor split-mirrors and Oracle standby database. Tuning and houskeeping bkoracle supports a number of tuning options including 'frames per set' for datafiles and archive logs, configurable channels (NetBackup jobs) and catalog crosschecking on a per instance basis.
Time limited backups Where a backup must finish before a given time bkoracel supports the option to give a backup a maximum duration or 'complete before time'. Where the time is exceeded the backup is ended, and continues from where it left off during the next backup. Very large database Support bkoracle has a number of facilities to support very large databases, where a database has a large proportion of read-only table spaces bkoracle will back the up over a number os sessions, typically backing up the read/write database everynight, and a 7th of the read-only each night Restartable backups It is always frustrating when a database backup has been running for hours only to get a media write errors minuets from the finish. Normally this would mean the backup starts again rom the begining, duplication all the work already completed. bkoracle supports re-startable backups, such that after a failure the backup restarts from the point at which it failed, saving time and resources.
Oracle 9, 10 and 11 Symantec NetBackup 4.5, 5.1, 6.0, 6.5 Solaris 2.6, 7, 9, 9, 10 HP-UX 11 AIX 5.1 & 5.3 Linux Redhat / CentOS Windows XP, 2000, 2003 (with restrictions)
In addition to our Oracle integration Virtualise-it have an IBM DB2 integration module offering a simplified deployment of the Symantec for DB2 agent. Again this is a single binary that eliminates the requirement for writing and supporting bespoke scripts for evey Database. Virtualise-it can advise on all aspects of your NetBackup deployment, and specialise in the deployment of data de-duplication virtual tape libraries. With recent experience deploying both Sepaton and IBM diligent VTL's we can show you how to save money whilst improving the overall performance a reliability of you NetBackup infrastructure.
A successful NetBackup deployment requires sufficient resouces to allow continued training and testing. Wether it be testing an upgrade or practicing a database restore having the correct infrastructure available can be a expensive and time consuming activity. To reduce costs and speed delivery of test and training infrastructure Virtualise-it have developend a number of pre-configured VMware vm-machines. Simply start the machines under vmplayer and their ready to run in minutes, at the end of testing or training session the machines can be rolled back to a clean state in seconds, ready for the next project. Current VMmachims available are Window NetBackup 6.5, Linux NetBackup 6.5 and Openfiler 2.1. There is no cost for these machines*, they are provided as part of our on-site consultancy / deployment. * VM machines require the user to have purcahed appropriate software licenses.
